Mold Costs Too High? New Designs Locked In? Shared ESD Tray Molds Let You Order Small Quantities Directly

You need only 50 trays, but the supplier tells you the mold alone will cost far more than the trays. That is not a trick; it is how tooling works. What most people do not realize is that in many cases, no new mold is needed at all.

The real cost of a new mold is higher than you think

Tooling for an ESD tray is a significant up-front cost, and complex shapes or multi-cavity molds cost more. With an annual demand in the thousands, the cost spreads out acceptably; but for 50 or 100 trays (prototypes, small-batch production, buffer stock), the mold charge becomes a barrier, and can be many times the cost of the trays themselves. Worse, once a mold is made, later design changes often need a new mold or rework, so the new product design is “locked in” by the mold.

When is a new mold worth it, and when is it not?

Shared existing molds: no new mold, order small quantities directly

JIAHON’s affiliated company has built up a large library of existing ESD tray molds over the years, covering many common electronic component sizes, and shares them with customers who need them. If your part fits, you can order directly from an existing mold, with no new mold.

How do you confirm an existing mold fits?

Send the part’s length, width and height, or a physical sample, and JIAHON engineering will match it against the mold library and arrange a quick trial fit. If the part fits and does not move, it can be used directly.
