3M N95 / KN95 non-medical particulate respirators (8210VCN / 8210CN / 9501+ / 9502+ and more)

A 3M KN95 respirator (also called a 3M dust mask or industrial dust mask; in English, a particulate respirator) is a disposable mask that filters dust and particles from the air; the models on this page are non-medical industrial versions. KN95 is a rating under China’s GB2626 standard and N95 is a rating under the US NIOSH 42 CFR 84 standard; both require filtration efficiency of ≥95%. The 3M 9000 series (9001, 9002) is KN90. This page includes ear-loop, head-strap and neck-strap versions, valved and unvalved versions, versions with an activated carbon layer, and the P95-rated 8577.

Models marked “—” in the rating column have no 3M document to check against yet, so no rating is given on this page for now. Selection advice

  • General industrial dust: 9501+ (50 per pack)
  • Long or hot work: valved versions (8210VCN, 9502V+, 9542V)
  • Lots of movement, long wear: head-strap versions (9502+, 9542, 9502V+)
  • Bulk issue to staff: 9501+ and 9502+ in packs of 50
  • To reduce low-level organic vapors: versions with an activated carbon layer (9541, 9542); if only KN90 is needed: 9001, 9002

FAQ

What rating is an N95 respirator? How do KN95 and N95 differ? N95 and KN95 are both ratings for ≥95% filtration efficiency against non-oil particles; the difference is the standard they follow: KN95 follows China’s GB2626, N95 follows the US NIOSH 42 CFR 84. A 3M technical bulletin states that respirators of these classes perform similarly. Source: 3M technical bulletin “Comparison of FFP2, KN95, and N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirator Classes”.

Are the 3M 9001 and 9002 KN95? No. The 3M 9000 series (9001 ear loop, 9002 head strap) is KN90, one filtration class below KN95. For KN95, choose the 9500+ series (9501+, 9502+, 9505+, 9501V+, 9502V+). Source: 3M KN90 / KN95 respirator selection chart (its opening line states the 9000 series is KN90; the model grouping in the table is unclear, so the opening line is followed); Indiana Department of Homeland Security N95 FAQ (lists 3M 9001 as unvalved KN90).

Valved or unvalved? Valved models have a V in the model number and an extra exhalation valve; valved and unvalved versions of the same series have the same filtration rating — choose by working habits. Source: 3M KN90 / KN95 respirator selection chart (valved and unvalved versions of the same series are listed under the same rating).

How do the 9541 and 9542 differ from the 9501+? The 9541 (ear loop) and 9542 (head strap) have an extra activated carbon layer, which 3M states can reduce low levels of organic vapors; the 9501+ and 9502+ have no activated carbon layer. Toxic gases require a suitable gas mask and cartridge. Source: 3M Singapore 9542 product page.

How does the 3M 8577 differ from ordinary dust masks? The 8577 is a P95-rated disposable respirator with an exhalation valve; 3M states it can relieve low levels of organic vapors, meaning concentrations below the OSHA permissible limit or local occupational exposure limits. 3M’s stated range is below these limits; above them, use a suitable gas mask and cartridge. How is the price of 3M N95 respirators determined? Some models are priced per box or pack and some per piece — check the pack size for each model. Larger quantities are quoted separately; send us the models and quantities.

Can these be used as medical masks? No. All models on this page are non-medical industrial particulate respirators, for dust, grinding and welding fume work. Source: product labeling on this page (non-medical).
