A 3M particulate filter (also called a filter pad or gas mask filter; in English, a particulate filter) is a replaceable filter element fitted to 3M half or full facepieces. It captures only airborne particles and does not handle gases or vapors; gases and vapors require a separate gas and vapor cartridge. This page covers three filters — 5N11, 2097 and 2091CN — the 501 filter retainer accessory, and the 6502QL half facepiece (filters sold separately). 6502QL Quick Latch half facepiece (also sold as a gas mask or dust mask)

The 3M 6502QL is a half facepiece, size medium, with a silicone face seal. The Quick Latch design drops down so it can be put on and taken off without removing a hard hat or face shield. Its bayonet connections accept 3M 2000, 5000 and 7000 series filters and 6000 series cartridges. Filters and cartridges are not included and must be added.

2091CN particulate filter

The 3M 2091CN is a P100 filter that captures oil and non-oil particles. Bayonet type, locks with a quarter turn, and fits directly on 3M 6000, 6500, 7500, 7800S and FF-400 series facepieces.

The 5N11 is an N95 filter; for use in oil-containing environments, see the filter instructions. It is held on a 3M 6000 series cartridge by the 501 filter retainer, one filter per cartridge. The 2097 is P100 with nuisance-level organic vapor odor relief (below OSHA PEL) — the 3M page lists organic vapors only; bayonet type, fits directly on the facepiece. Before buying, confirm that your facepiece is a 3M 6000 series model.

FAQ

What is the difference between 3M filters and cartridges? Filters capture airborne particles (dust, fumes, mists); cartridges handle gases and vapors. The 5N11 is only a particulate filter and must be used with a 3M 6000 series cartridge or the 603 adapter; the 2097 has nuisance-level organic vapor odor relief only and cannot replace a cartridge. This page has no cartridges — please ask if you need them. Sources: 3M 5N11 product page; 3M 2097 product page.

How often should 3M filters be replaced? 3M’s product pages say to replace filters when they are dirty, damaged or breathing becomes difficult. P series filters (2091, 2097) also have a time limit: in environments with oil particles only, the 3M technical bulletin gives 40 hours or 30 days, whichever comes first; with no oil particles, or a mix of oil and non-oil particles, the dirty / damaged / hard-to-breathe rule applies. The 5N11 is N95; for oil-containing environments, see the filter instructions; the N series is defined in 42 CFR 84. Time limits follow 3M’s rules — check the filter instructions for actual use. Sources: 3M 2091 product page; 3M P series filter technical bulletin; Pesticide Stewardship filter use limitations.

How do the 5N11, 2097 and 2091 differ? The 5N11 is N95; the 2091 and 2097 are P100. US 42 CFR 84 divides particulate filters into N, R and P series, each with three efficiency levels of 95%, 99% and 99.97%, tested with 0.3 micron particles; the N series is tested with sodium chloride (non-oil) and the P series with dioctyl phthalate (DOP, oil), so P series filters can be used against both oil and non-oil particles. The 2097 also has nuisance-level organic vapor odor relief; the 2091 does not. Sources: CDC / NIOSH 42 CFR 84 summary; 3M P series filter technical bulletin; 3M 2097; 3M 2091.

Why does the 5N11 need the 501 filter retainer? The 5N11 must be held by the 3M 501 filter retainer, one filter per cartridge; the 501 is a required accessory, which is why this page sells the 501 separately (2 per set). The 2091 and 2097 are bayonet type and do not need the 501. Sources: 3M 5N11 product page; 3M 501 product page.

Which 3M facepieces do these filters fit? 3M product pages list: the 2091 fits 6000, 6500, 7500, 7800S and FF-400 series facepieces; the 2097 additionally lists the Scott AV-3000 series; the 5N11 fits 6000 series cartridges or the 603 adapter. The 6502QL is a 6500 series half facepiece. The 3200 and other series are not listed on this page — please ask. Sources: 3M 2091; 3M 2097; 3M 5N11; 3M 6502QL.
