For odors and low-level organic vapors in plant work.
Ordinary medical masks block droplets and dust but do little against chemical odors, flux fumes or paint solvent vapors. An activated carbon mask adds a layer of activated carbon non-woven fabric that adsorbs odors and low concentrations of organic vapors. The carbon layer (layer 2) is the main difference from a medical mask; the melt-blown layer (layer 3) filters particles.

Activated carbon vs ordinary medical masks
| Need | Medical mask | Activated carbon mask |
|---|---|---|
| Droplets | Yes | Yes |
| Dust | Yes | Yes |
| Odors (flux, paint, solvents) | No | Yes (carbon adsorption) |
| Low-level organic vapors (VOCs) | No | Some adsorption |
| High concentrations of toxic gases (ammonia, chlorine, etc.) | Not for use | Not for use — use a gas mask with filter cartridges |
Important limit: this mask is for odors and low-level organic vapors in general industrial work. Where there are high concentrations of toxic gases such as ammonia, strong acid vapors or chlorine, use a proper gas mask and filter cartridges; a flat activated carbon mask does not protect you in those conditions.
Where it is used
- SMT line operators — flux reflow fumes and residual odors
- Stencil cleaning — vapors from alcohol-based and water-based cleaners
- Spraying, coating and bonding — first-line protection from solvent vapors
- Warehouse receiving — odors from packaging preservatives and chemicals
- Home cleaning — cleaning agent vapors and dust
