Removes oxygen, moisture and hydrocarbon impurities from GC carrier gas, stabilizing the baseline and extending column life. The renewable design lowers consumable costs.
The Agilent G3440-60003 is the replacement cartridge for the ReNEWable gas purification system, designed to purify GC (gas chromatography) carrier and detector gases. One cartridge handles about 20 gas cylinders, typically replaced about once a year, removing O₂, H₂O and hydrocarbon interferences to maintain reproducible, high-sensitivity results. If your GC shows baseline drift or rising background noise, replacing this cartridge is the first troubleshooting step.

Why does GC carrier gas need extra purification?
Even with 5.0 grade (99.999%) high-purity helium, residual moisture in the cylinder, oxidation in the lines and regulator leaks can still introduce ppm levels of O₂ and H₂O. For high-sensitivity systems such as ECD (electron capture detector) or GC/MS, oxygen above 1 ppm can oxidize the column stationary phase, raise baseline noise and make analyte response unstable.
The dual-function cartridge in the G3440-60003 removes oxygen (upper indicator window) and moisture (lower indicator window) at the same time; the two separate indicator windows show depletion without shutting down.
| Indicator color | Meaning | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Blue (normal) | Purification capacity sufficient | Continue use |
| Partly faded | About 20% capacity remaining | Prepare a spare, schedule replacement |
| Fully faded / white | Purifier exhausted | Replace the G3440-60003 immediately |
Installation position and notes
The G3440-60003 is installed between the regulator outlet and the GC gas inlet, usually with the G3440-60001 base (the base is purchased separately or factory-installed). The base does not need to be replaced when changing cartridges.
⚠️ Replacement steps: before replacing, close the cylinder valve and release pressure; unscrew the old cartridge and seal its inlet and outlet with the supplied caps; check that the O-rings between the new cartridge and the base are intact before tightening; after opening the gas, check for leaks with soapy water or a helium leak detector. These are general steps — follow Agilent’s official instructions.
