Smaller cavities: ≤30 mm series. Larger cavities: ≤60 mm series.

Where is this size range used on SMT lines?

Antistatic trays with 31–45 mm cavities are among the most frequently used sizes on SMT lines in electronics plants. The range covers most mid-size IC packages (QFP, SOP and larger BGA), module-type components, contact connectors and some small power modules.

Compared with the ≤30 mm series, parts in this range usually cost more per unit and need more attention to static sensitivity. Choosing the right tray material and cavity clearance directly affects yield and reliability.

Series key specifications

  • Cavity length range: 30.5–45 mm (square cavities)
  • Material / color: antistatic / conductive PS, black (white for some models)
  • ESD protection: static dissipative, with reference to ANSI/ESD S20.20 classification requirements
  • Outer sizes: many sizes; see each model in the table

Two common mistakes

Mistake 1: “If it just fits, that’s enough.” A cavity exactly the size of the part looks precise, but leaves almost no cushion during handling or vibration. Leave 0.5–1 mm clearance on each side so parts go in without forcing and don’t get pinched if the tray flexes.

Mistake 2: “An antistatic tray works anywhere.” An antistatic tray is just one part of an EPA (ESD protected area). If operators don’t wear wrist straps, the floor isn’t static-dissipative, or the tray has no grounding path to dissipate charge, its protection is greatly reduced. Trays are one component of system-level protection, not a stand-alone solution.

Choosing wall thickness (0.6T / 0.8T / 1.1T)

Some cavity sizes come in several wall thicknesses. Thinner walls (0.6T) are lighter and stack in less space, suited to manual kitting stations. Thicker walls (0.8T–1.1T) are more rigid, for robotic picking or trays reused for many turnover cycles. If unsure, choose the thicker version.

Further reading: antistatic trays with no tooling and a 50-piece minimum; shared tray tooling with nearly a hundred molds to lower tooling costs.
