Battery Safety Test Equipment | Short Circuit, Nail Penetration, Crush, Impact, Burning, Thermal Shock, Low Pressure — 10 Models

Test how batteries react under abuse conditions

Battery safety test equipment (also called battery testers or battery abuse testers) subjects batteries to short circuit, nail penetration, crushing, heavy impact, burning, thermal shock and low pressure, to see whether they heat up, smoke, catch fire or burst.

This page covers 10 models. The size and weight below are for the representative model (short-circuit explosion-proof chamber); sizes and configurations of other models are quoted to requirements.

Where they are used

  • Short-circuit and similar tests can make batteries burst or burn; steel (or specified material) enclosures contain the test to reduce risk to operators.
  • Safety testing of electric vehicle batteries, battery packs and cells.

The 10 models

  1. Short-circuit explosion-proof tester: connects the positive and negative terminals directly so the battery discharges a high current instantly, to observe heating, smoke, fire or bursting; built as a steel enclosure to contain violent reactions.
  2. Short-circuit explosion-proof chamber: the same test in a chamber configuration; please ask about the structural differences from the tester.
  3. Thermal shock chamber: rapid heating and cooling to see whether the case, contacts and seals are damaged by the temperature change, and whether the battery catches fire or bursts.
  4. Heavy impact chamber: drops a weight from a set height onto the battery to simulate crushing or impact, checking for fire, bursting or leakage.
  5. Altitude low-pressure chamber: places the battery in a low-pressure chamber simulating high altitude (for example air transport), checking for leakage, deformation or fire.
  6. Vacuum simulator: evacuates the chamber to vacuum or low pressure; achievable pressure range and chamber configuration depend on the model — please ask.
  7. Burning chamber: exposes the battery to flame or high-temperature burning to observe ignition, bursting, spatter and burning time.
  8. Combined nail penetration and crush tester: both tests in one machine, saving the space of two machines.
  9. Crush tester: presses the battery with a plate or rod to a set deformation, checking for short circuit, fire or bursting.
  10. Nail penetration tester: pierces the battery with a steel nail to simulate an internal short circuit, checking for heating, smoke or fire.

How to choose

  • To see the reaction to a short circuit with an enclosure to contain it: short-circuit explosion-proof tester or chamber.
  • To simulate penetration: nail penetration tester; to add crushing as well: combined nail penetration and crush tester.
  • To simulate crushing or impact: crush tester or heavy impact chamber (falling weight).
  • For rapid temperature change: thermal shock chamber.
  • For high altitude or low pressure (for example air transport): altitude low-pressure chamber or vacuum simulator.
  • For reaction to fire: burning chamber.
  • Not sure which tests you need? Tell us the standard or the requirements of the test you must meet, and we will check them with you.

FAQ

Will my battery fit? The chamber of the representative model (short-circuit explosion-proof chamber) is 1000 × 1000 × 500 mm. For larger batteries or packs, or other models, size, material and configuration can be customized — please send the battery’s dimensions and weight.

Can several tests be combined? Yes, several tests can be integrated in one machine as a custom build. Tell us the battery type, size and tests required, and we will match the models.
