A metal filter is fitted in front of the heat exchanger in the cooling zone of BTU reflow ovens. It traps flux residue and dust in the cooling air path, preventing debris from building up and blocking the heat exchanger fins so cooling efficiency stays at its design level. When the filter clogs, cooling zone airflow drops and boards leave the oven hotter, which can affect solder joint quality and cause board warpage.
Compared with foam filters, metal filters can be cleaned and reused: blowing compressed air back through them restores airflow. We suggest adding them to a quarterly maintenance cleaning plan, and replacing them with a filter of the same specification if they are damaged or deformed so the full filter area is kept.
Cleaning and maintenance: each quarter, blow compressed air back through the filter from the outlet side to remove dust. If the mesh is torn or the frame is deformed, replace the whole filter so debris cannot bypass it into the heat exchanger.
