JHPBT-A1 water contact angle tester

The contact angle is the angle formed where gas, liquid and solid meet, and it is used to judge the wettability of a material surface. The JHPBT-A1 water contact angle tester uses optical profile projection to analyse the outline of a liquid droplet on a solid sample: it captures the droplet’s shape on the sample surface and reads the contact angle from the image.

It has a 5-megapixel camera running at 300 fps (higher frame rates optional) and a custom telecentric zoom lens that tilts ±10°. Droplets are dispensed by a software-controlled automatic dispensing pump with a 500 μl syringe, and both the sample stage and the dispensing position can be fine-tuned by hand.

Terms used in measurement

  • Contact angle: the angle θ formed where gas, liquid and solid meet; used to judge the wettability of a material surface.
  • Surface tension: the pulling force, per unit length of boundary, acting perpendicular to that boundary between any two adjacent parts of a surface.
  • Interfacial tension: the force acting between a liquid and another liquid it does not mix with.

How to choose

  • To measure the contact angle of a droplet on a sample and compare surface wettability: choose the JHPBT-A1.
  • If your process includes plasma surface treatment, see the JHPBT-290 vacuum plasma cleaner (batch type), the JHPBT-390 inline plasma cleaner or the JHPBT-590 inline vacuum plasma cleaner; contact angle can be used to compare wettability before and after treatment.
  • To check for ionic residue on boards after cleaning, see the JHPB-TLZ20 ionic contamination tester; for a larger model, see the JHPBT-LZ22.
