Double-ended stiff bristle mainboard brush: why use a double-ended, metal-handled stiff brush for phone repair?

A double-ended stiff hog bristle brush, 142 mm long, with a metal handle and a thin 4 mm bristle base, for removing dust and residue from phone mainboards, solder pads and around ICs.

What difference do double ends and a metal handle make?

Brushes wear out fast in phone repair and PCB cleaning, and once the bristles splay the whole brush must be replaced. The double-ended design gives one brush two usable heads: when one end wears, flip it over and keep going. The handle material decides whether it can be used with cleaning fluid: wooden handles swell, crack and shed wood chips after repeatedly absorbing fluid, contaminating the board again; a metal handle doesn’t absorb fluid and can be rinsed, dried and reused whole. The bristles are stiff hog bristle, firm enough to brush residue from around solder pads, yet the bristle tips are still far softer than the board’s solder mask.

Quick guide to repair brushes

TypeBristlesHandleUse
Double-ended stiff brushStiff hog bristleMetalMainboard dust removal, brushing residue from pads (this product)
Wooden-handle brushHog bristle / nylonWoodWhere an insulated handle is needed; doesn’t tolerate repeated soaking in solvent
Soft brushWool / microfiberPlastic / woodLenses and optical coatings, which stiff bristles would scratch
Antistatic cleanroom brushConductive fiberConductive plasticCleanrooms; surface resistance documentation available

Selection note: the handle is metal, which conducts electricity, so clean only with power off and residual charge discharged; if your work requires an insulated handle, choose a wooden or plastic handle instead. Hog bristle has a low tendency to generate static, but this brush comes without surface resistance or cleanliness reports and is not a cleanroom-grade ESD brush. The manufacturer also lists a bristle length of 128 mm, measured differently from the 142 mm overall length; confirm before ordering if you need exact dimensions. These are general guidelines; individual cases vary.
