ESD EVA foam

Black carbon-loaded EVA foam as a 6-compartment box, adhesive-backed sheet or custom insert.

ESD foam (also called anti-static or dissipative foam) is foam packaging with a controlled surface resistance, so static can drain in a controlled way. By surface resistance it is classed as static dissipative or conductive. The foam on this page is black, carbon-loaded ESD EVA foam, in three versions: a 6-compartment box, adhesive-backed custom sheets and a 40-compartment custom insert.

How ESD EVA foam works

Standard EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is an insulator with no antistatic function. ESD EVA foam adds carbon black or a conductive agent to the formula to bring surface resistance into the dissipative range, so static drains in a controlled way when parts touch the foam. When buying, make sure it is ESD EVA and not ordinary EVA; ESD foam is usually black or dark grey.

Specify thickness (usually 0.5 to 50 mm), outer size, cut-out shape (round, square or custom) and whether you need adhesive backing. Sending part dimensions or CAD drawings speeds up the quote. Minimum order depends on complexity.

Color is not a specification

Black ESD foam usually has conductive carbon black in the foam body. Pink foam usually has a surface antistatic treatment that relies on moisture in the air, so it works less well at low humidity. Color is only a convention. Under ANSI/ESD S541, conductive materials have a surface resistance below 1 × 10⁴ Ω, and static dissipative materials are at least 1 × 10⁴ Ω and below 1 × 10¹¹ Ω. When buying, ask for the surface resistance value and test conditions rather than relying on color or name.

EVA or EPE?

Compared with EPE (expanded polyethylene), EVA is denser, recovers better, lasts longer and costs more. Choose EVA for durable, resilient uses; EPE is often chosen for price-sensitive packaging.
