ESD PVC curtain

Three styles compared, plus installation and acceptance testing.

PVC antistatic curtain is a common, low-cost way to separate areas for static control in cleanrooms and electronics plants. Three things matter: (1) single- or double-sided coating decides how evenly static is drained; (2) how much light you need decides the style; (3) after installation, measure tribo-charge voltage (< 50 V) and charge decay time (< 0.5 s) for acceptance.

Tribo-charge voltage< 50 V
Charge decay time< 0.5 s

Single vs double coating: people walking through may touch either side of the curtain. Single coating drains static on one side only; double coating works on both, giving steadier static removal at busy main passages.

Installation

The curtain is bought by the roll and cut to fit.

  • Strip curtain: cut the roll into strips (200 mm wide recommended, overlapping by at least 50 mm) and hang them from a top rail or stainless steel bar. Easy to replace; the most common form.
  • Fixed partition: fix a whole sheet to a frame for static separation where nobody passes through. Clamp the fixed edges with battens so static does not build up at the corners.

After installing, leave 10–15 mm between the bottom edge and the floor to avoid wear. If you need ESD grounding, add a ground clip on the hanging bar. In the same work area, use an ESD table mat and wrist straps and ground all three together as part of your ESD control program.

Acceptance testing

ItemMethodPass
Surface resistance (point to point)Surface resistance meter, electrodes 25 cm apart10⁶–10⁹ Ω
Tribo-charge voltageRub with a standard cloth at fixed force, then measure< 50 V
Charge decay timeCharge to 1000 V, time to < 100 V< 0.5 s
VisualInspectionNo damage or obvious scratches; even coating

Measure once after installation to set a baseline, then every six months. If surface resistance drifts by more than one order of magnitude (for example 10⁸ toward the 10⁹ limit), consider cleaning or replacing. Oil and dust raise surface resistance; wiping regularly with a neutral cleaner extends service life.
