Honeywell C7061A UV flame detector

Flame supervision is a core safety interlock on industrial boilers, heating furnaces and burners. Conventional flame rods respond slowly and wear out quickly, whereas an ultraviolet (UV) flame detector senses the UV radiation from a flame within milliseconds and, together with a flame safeguard control, gives fast flame-failure protection.

The Honeywell C7061A series is known as the “Purple Peeper” after its purple cast aluminum housing. The C7061A-1012 is the standard model with dynamic self-check: a built-in oscillating shutter periodically blocks the UV tube, and if the shutter or tube fails, the control detects the fault and triggers a safety shutdown.

Installation notes: mount the detector so that the conduit opening points about 45° below horizontal to keep condensation out. Aim at the root of the flame, where UV energy peaks, not at the tip. Two detectors can be used in parallel to reduce nuisance shutdowns caused by interference on a single sensor.

Discontinuation: Honeywell has discontinued the C7061A-1012; the direct replacement is the C7061A1053.
