KEYENCE BL-501 fixed-mount barcode reader
The KEYENCE BL-501 is a laser 1D barcode reader designed to be mounted on production equipment and scan automatically — it is not a handheld scanner. Barcode data is sent to a host PC or PLC over RS-232C serial communication, and the external trigger input lets it be integrated into automated WIP (work-in-process) tracking. Key selection points: reading distance, communication interface and mounting method.
Handheld scanner vs. fixed reader
| Item | Handheld scanner | Fixed reader (BL-501) |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Held by an operator, aimed and triggered by hand | Fixed mounting, external trigger or continuous scanning |
| Typical use | Picking, receiving, stocktaking | Line WIP tracking, automatic sorting, quality stations |
| Interface | USB HID (keyboard emulation) | RS-232 serial |
| Mounting | In the operator’s hand | Above a conveyor / inside a machine frame |
| PLC integration | Uncommon | External trigger + communication protocol |
Specifications
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Scanning method | Laser scanning (1D barcodes) |
| Readable codes | Code 39 / Code 128 / EAN / UPC / Codabar / ITF and other common 1D codes |
| Scan rate | 200 scans/s |
| Reading distance | Typical 50–300 mm, depending on barcode density |
| Interface | RS-232C |
| External trigger | Supported (digital input) |
| Power supply | 5 VDC (via communication cable or external supply) |
| Housing | Die-cast aluminum alloy |
| Protection | IP64 |
| Operating temperature | 0 to +40°C |
1D only: the BL-501 does not read 2D codes such as QR Code or DataMatrix. If your line tracking uses 2D codes (for example DataMatrix on PCBs), an image-based reader is required. 1D barcodes remain common on WIP labels, bin labels and shipping cartons.
Typical integration
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| 1. Part in position | A photoelectric sensor detects the workpiece and outputs a trigger signal |
| 2. Triggered scan | The BL-501 receives the external trigger and starts laser scanning |
| 3. Data transfer | After a successful read, barcode data is sent to the host / PLC over RS-232 |
| 4. Processing | The host checks WIP data and decides to sort, log or release |
RS-232 note: many current industrial PCs have no native COM port, so a USB-to-RS232 adapter or RS232-to-Ethernet converter is often needed. Check the host-side interface before ordering.
Quick selection
| Step | Check | Choice |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Code type | 1D or 2D? | 1D → BL-501; 2D → image-based reader |
| 2. Mounting | Fixed or handheld? | Fixed → BL-501; handheld → Honeywell / Newland / ZEBRA |
| 3. Interface | Does the host support RS-232? | COM port → direct connection; none → add a USB adapter |
