KEYENCE FD-XS8 clamp-on ultrasonic flow sensor head
Conventional flow meters need the pipe to be cut and the line stopped for installation, which costs downtime and adds leak risk. The FD-XS8 uses transit-time ultrasonic measurement: the sensor head clamps onto the outside of the tube, with no pipe cutting and no wetted parts, so it can be installed while the process keeps running. It fits resin or metal tubes with ø6 mm (1/4″) outer diameter, measures 0–3,000 mL/min and reaches ±0.1% FS accuracy at 50 ms response on resin tubes.
The difference in ultrasonic transit time between the downstream and upstream directions is proportional to flow velocity.

Transit-time vs. Doppler
Ultrasonic flow meters come in two types. Transit-time meters are for clear liquids (cooling water, ultrapure water, chemicals), since the ultrasound must pass fully through the liquid. Doppler meters are for liquids containing suspended particles or bubbles, relying on reflections from those particles. The FD-XS8 is a transit-time type, suited to semiconductor process cooling water and chemical flow monitoring.
- Install without shutdown: the head clamps onto the tube with a bracket, so it can be installed or replaced while the process runs.
- 50 ms response: for fast flow-abnormality detection or closed-loop flow control.
Note: the FD-XS8 is a sensor head only and must be used with a KEYENCE FD series controller; please confirm the controller model separately.
