MOLYKOTE 111 (also sold as DC 111) is a silicone grease and sealant made from silicone oil and an inorganic thickener. It is used to lubricate and seal valves, O-rings and gaskets, and to protect electrical parts from moisture.
Specifications
| Item | Specification |
|---|
| Product | MOLYKOTE 111 compound (also called DC 111, silicone grease) |
| Working temperature | −40 °C to +204 °C |
| Appearance | White paste |
| Solubility | Insoluble in water, methanol and ethanol (test chemical resistance before use) |
| Pack | 150 g tube; 12 tubes per carton |
| Shelf life | 60 months unopened, stored below 20 °C |
| Application | By hand, brush, dipping, or automatic dispensing equipment |
Main properties
| Property | What it means |
|---|
| Wide temperature range | Stays a paste from −40 to +204 °C; does not separate or run when temperature cycles |
| Chemical resistance | Not affected by mineral oil, vegetable oil or air; resists most dilute acids, alkalis and water-based solutions. Test it in your own chemical environment first |
| Electrical insulation | Used on electrical connectors and electronic parts to keep moisture out |
| Rubber and plastic | Used on O-rings made of NBR, EPDM and silicone, and on most engineering plastics |
| Low volatility | Low vapour pressure, so it does not dry out quickly and needs less frequent re-application |
Where it is used
| Area | Use |
|---|
| Valves and pneumatic parts | Valve spools and plug-valve threads: sealing and long-life lubrication; assembly with O-rings to prevent leaks |
| Vacuum systems | Pump seals and vacuum valve spools, where evaporation loss at low pressure matters |
| Electrical and electronic | Transformer and connector gaskets: moisture protection; keeps gaskets from sticking to metal |
| Marine and outdoor | Seals on equipment exposed to humidity and salt spray |
| Maintenance | Lubricating O-rings and gaskets during assembly so the rubber does not twist or tear |
Handling notes
- Do not use it on surfaces that will later be painted or coated. Coatings do not bond well to silicone-treated surfaces.
- Do not use it with liquid oxygen, or where oxygen service is required.
- It dissolves in some solvents (for example xylene, mineral spirits and methyl ethyl ketone). Choose solvents with their flammability and toxicity in mind, and test before use.
- Some grease guns may not work with it. Test before use.
- Contact with eyes may cause temporary discomfort. Rinse with water.
- Typical-property values are not for writing specifications. Contact the manufacturer for specification work.
