Why ordinary scanners cannot read laser-etched codes
The Newland NVH220B-HD is an industrial handheld scanner designed for electronics manufacturing. Its main strength is reading DPM (Direct Part Marking) codes — 2D codes laser-etched or dot-peened directly onto part surfaces. Ordinary retail scanners cannot read these codes because DPM codes have low contrast, reflective surfaces and very small sizes. The NVH220B-HD uses an AI decoding engine and a multi-light illumination system to solve this.
NVH220B-HD vs NVH100
| Item | NVH220B-HD | NVH100 |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | High-end industrial DPM scanning | General industrial scanning |
| DPM code reading | Strong (laser-etched / dot-peen / chemically etched codes) | Basic support |
| Sensor | High-definition CMOS | Standard CMOS |
| Illumination | Multi-light (white + red + diffuse) | Standard white light |
| AI decoding | AI-assisted decoding engine | Standard decoding |
| Minimum resolution | 3 mil (0.076 mm) | 4 mil (0.1 mm) |
| Applications | PCB, IC packaging, panel traceability | Warehousing, receiving, general production lines |
| Cost level | Higher | Lower |
Key question: are your codes printed on paper labels, or marked directly on the part surface (DPM)? For DPM codes choose the NVH220B-HD; for paper labels the NVH100 is enough.
Why DPM codes are hard to read
DPM marks the code directly on the part surface and is common in electronics manufacturing. Its optical properties are completely different from printed barcodes:
| Challenge | Cause | NVH220B-HD solution |
|---|---|---|
| Low contrast | Laser-etched code color close to the substrate | Multi-angle illumination increases contrast |
| Reflection on curved surfaces | Mirror reflection on metal / glass | Diffuse light removes glare |
| Very small size | DataMatrix codes on IC packages can be under 2 mm | HD sensor + close-range focus |
| Surface damage | Codes scratched or contaminated during processing | AI decoding engine tolerates damage |
| Dot-peen relief | Dot-peen matrix codes have 3D texture | Switching illumination angles |

USB plug and play
The NVH220B-HD works as soon as it is plugged into USB. By default it emulates a keyboard (HID mode), so scan results appear at the cursor. No driver is needed, and ERP / MES systems receive the data directly. To use COM port mode, switch with a setup barcode.
Quick selection
| Step | Check | Choice |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Code type | Paper labels, or DPM laser-etched / dot-peen codes? | DPM → NVH220B-HD; paper labels → NVH100 |
| 2. Code size | Minimum module width? | < 4 mil → HD version; ≥ 4 mil → standard version |
| 3. Quantity | How many, at which stations? | One per station, plus one spare |
When asking for a quote
Tell us: (1) whether you need to read DPM codes or ordinary barcodes, (2) quantity, (3) application (PCB, warehousing, packing, etc.). If you have sample codes that are hard to read, send photos and we will help judge whether you need the HD version.
