OMRON R88M servo motors (1S series)
Encoder resolution sets the limit of servo positioning accuracy. The OMRON 1S series uses a 23-bit absolute encoder as standard (8,388,608 pulses per revolution). Compared with 17-bit or incremental encoders, it gives finer position feedback, and no homing is needed after power is restored. With 1S servo drives over EtherCAT, control cycles down to 125 μs support multi-axis synchronization and high-speed precision positioning.

23-bit absolute encoder
All 1S motors use a 23-bit multi-turn absolute encoder with 8,388,608 pulses per revolution, compared with 131,072 for a 17-bit encoder. Because the absolute encoder retains position at power-off, the machine does not need to home again after power-up, shortening start-up time — especially useful on multi-axis equipment.
Brake models: BO vs. BS
Both are for applications that must hold position at power-off (vertical axes, lifting mechanisms, robot joints):
- BOS2: brake with oil seal, for vertical positioning where dust or coolant splash is present.
- BS2: standard brake, for applications such as robot joints that need light weight and fast response.
Safety (STO)
The 1S servo system provides STO (Safe Torque Off) via the servo drive, rated SIL2 / PLd, cutting torque output at an emergency stop without an external safety relay — for machines that must meet machinery safety requirements.
- Communication: EtherCAT real-time communication, 125 μs control cycle, multi-axis synchronized interpolation
- Protection: IP67 (oil seal models), resistant to direct coolant splash
- Power supply: 0.4 / 0.75 kW three-phase 200 V; 1.5 kW single-phase 230 V
