Why it matters: bearings and bushings (holder steel) are the precision supports for the rotating and sliding mechanisms in a Panasonic placement head. The head spins at tens of thousands of rpm, so bearing durability matters a great deal. A worn bearing shows up as noise, more vibration and lower positioning accuracy. Replace bearings within the preventive maintenance cycle rather than waiting for the head to seize.
Early signs of bearing trouble: a faint grinding noise when the head turns, a placement offset rate that creeps up, and a head that runs hotter than usual. These are typical early signs of bearing wear, so we suggest keeping spares on hand.
