Industrial position sensors from several brands — OMRON E2KQ-X10ME1 (capacitive), E2E-X10MF1 (inductive, PNP), BALLUFF BES M18MI / M12MI (precision inductive) and EFECTOR IGA2008-ABOA (AC/DC 20–250 V, usable on AC 110 V). Covers both DC 12–24 V and AC 110 V systems, for SMT fixture position detection, robot position sensing and machine travel verification.
A proximity switch is a position sensor used in electronics manufacturing; together with photoelectric sensors and limit switches it is one of the “three eyes of the PLC”. Its advantages are no mechanical contact and long life (theoretically 10^7–10^8 operations). Although the sensing distance is short (typically 2–10 mm), it suits tight spaces such as inside SMT mechanisms, fixture position checks and robot arm position sensing.
This series covers 5 models from 3 brands: OMRON automation mainstream (E2KQ capacitive, E2E inductive PNP), BALLUFF precision industrial (BES M18 / M12, with non-ferrous versions) and EFECTOR special specifications (IGA series AC/DC 2-wire). Multiple brands side by side reflect real production lines — a mix built up from machines of different years and makers. A JIAHON affiliated company supplies customers throughout Taiwan.

Applications
Proximity switches are the “workhorse of precise position sensing” in electronics manufacturing — part presence in mechanisms, robot position verification, fixture clamping confirmation and machine end-of-travel detection: almost anywhere metal must be sensed without contact. Common applications at SMT, EMS and semiconductor plants:
- SMT fixture position detection: after the lid of an ICT or FCT test fixture is pressed down, the system must confirm the pressure block is in position before starting the test. An M18 cylindrical inductive proximity switch on the side of the fixture senses the metal block — no contact, longer life than a limit switch. OMRON E2E-X10MF1
- Robot / slide position sensing: at the end of a SCARA robot or at both ends of a linear slide, a short BALLUFF M12 proximity switch on the side senses a metal locating block to avoid collisions. The small M12 size gives flexible mounting. BALLUFF BES M12MI-NSC40B-S04G
- Semiconductor tool travel verification: end-of-travel verification on wafer loaders, wafer handlers and mask change mechanisms uses the BALLUFF BES M18 precision inductive type, which is more accurate with non-ferrous metals (some mechanisms are aluminum or copper). BALLUFF BES M18MI-NSC80B-BV03
- Retrofitting older AC control panels: older Western machines have AC 110 V control circuits with no DC 24 V supply, and adding a DC power supply for new sensors costs too much. The EFECTOR IGA 2-wire AC 110 V sensor connects directly in series in the AC circuit, saving a power supply. EFECTOR IGA2008-ABOA
- Liquid level / plastic part detection (capacitive): detecting non-metal objects such as liquid in plastic bottles, plastic trays in position or enough powder feed — inductive sensors cannot. The OMRON E2KQ capacitive sensor responds to any dielectric and can sense through a partition. OMRON E2KQ-X10ME1

Inductive vs capacitive: principle and use
Proximity switches use two principles; the difference is whether they sense “metal only or any object”:
| Type | Principle | Target | Sensing distance | Drawback | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inductive | Oscillating coil disturbed by metal | Metal (steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel) | 2–10 mm standard | Does not detect non-metals | SMT fixtures, robots, mechanism parts |
| Capacitive | Change in electric field (dielectric) | Any object (including liquids, plastics, powders) | 2–25 mm | Sensitive to humidity and temperature, more false triggers | Liquid level, plastic bottles, powder feed |
A common misconception: do not treat a capacitive sensor as a universal solution just because it “senses anything”. Capacitive sensors are very sensitive to the environment (humidity, temperature, dust), need frequent adjustment and fail clearly more often than inductive ones. In practice most applications use inductive sensors; switch to capacitive only when a non-metal object must be detected and inductive cannot do it.
OMRON / BALLUFF / EFECTOR brand positioning
| Brand | Position | Strengths | Relative cost | Common lines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OMRON | Automation components | Full E2E, E2C and E2KQ ranges; works smoothly with Taiwanese and Japanese PLC systems | Medium | Taiwanese SMT/EMS plants, new lines |
| BALLUFF | Precision industrial sensors | BES series in ferrous / non-ferrous, long / short range, high / low temperature versions | High | Precision lines, special applications, cleanrooms |
| EFECTOR / ifm | Industrial fluid and position sensors | IGA series AC/DC 2-wire (uncommon), fluid sensors | Medium–high | Older Western machines, AC control circuits |
Practical rule: use whatever brand the machine maker fitted (ease of maintenance) → for new lines, OMRON first → for precision or special needs, switch to BALLUFF (transparent specifications, technical parameters available) → for retrofitting older AC machines, EFECTOR / ifm (2-wire, no DC supply needed).
Size and sensing distance: M18 / M12 / M8
- M18 (18 mm): sensing distance 5–8 mm, standard industrial use, common on lines.
- M12 (12 mm): sensing distance 2–4 mm, tight mechanisms, side of SMT pick-and-place heads.
- M8 (8 mm): sensing distance 1–2 mm, very tight spaces (gaps in fixtures).
- Rectangular types: for flat mounting, OMRON TL-W series (not listed on this page, available on request).
- Flush types: sensing face flush with the mounting surface, so the mechanism does not catch on it.
Selection formula: the actual mounting distance should be 50–70% of the rated distance (design margin against false triggering and overload). For example, an M18 rated at 8 mm is more stable mounted at 4–5 mm. Long-range types (such as BES M18 long-range, rated 12 mm, not listed on this page, available on request) cost more but give more margin — worth it at critical sensing points.
DC 3-wire vs AC 2-wire: wiring in practice
DC 3-wire (mainstream): three wires — brown +24 V, blue 0 V, black signal (NPN/PNP). OMRON E2E, BALLUFF BES and OMRON E2KQ are all DC 3-wire. They connect to standard PLC DI cards and are used in most industrial applications.
AC 2-wire (special): the two wires are connected in series in an AC 110 V/220 V control circuit and can drive a relay coil or AC-input PLC directly. The EFECTOR IGA2008-ABOA is a typical AC/DC 20–250 V 2-wire type (usable on AC 110 V circuits), a common choice when retrofitting older Western machines. Note that leakage current of 1–3 mA may affect low-power loads.
NPN vs PNP (DC only): NPN switches to 0 V when on (COM to +24 V), the default for Taiwanese and Japanese PLCs; PNP switches to +24 V when on (COM to 0 V), the Western default. Standardizing a whole line in one purchase keeps things simple. The F1 suffix on the OMRON E2E-X10MF1 means PNP.
NO vs NC contacts: NO (normally open) — on when an object is detected; NC (normally closed) — off when an object is detected. In BALLUFF BES model codes, NSC = NPN NO, PSC = PNP NO, NOC = NPN NC, POC = PNP NC. Safety-related interlocks (such as door switches and emergency stops) mostly use NC (fail-safe if the wire breaks).
Note: descriptions of brand positioning, sensing distance, leakage current and operating life reflect common industry practice; actual values follow the manufacturer’s data sheets and current market conditions.
