Siemens 3RT2916-1BB00 surge suppressor
The Siemens SIRIUS 3RT2916 series surge suppressors use a varistor to absorb the back EMF generated when a contactor coil is switched off, protecting PLC output modules and control circuits.
Why does a contactor need a surge suppressor? A contactor coil is an inductive load. When a PLC output cuts the coil supply, the magnetic energy stored in the coil turns into a high reverse voltage spike — up to several hundred volts — within a very short time. This spike travels back along the control wiring to the PLC output terminals, causing malfunctions or even destroying the output module. A surge suppressor fitted across the coil absorbs the energy as heat and protects the whole control circuit.

Varistor or RC element? Varistor types (BB00) suit DC coils, with fast response and high energy absorption. RC types (CB00 / CD00) suit AC coils and suppress both spikes and high-frequency interference. For DC 24 V coils choose a varistor; for AC 220 V coils choose an RC element.
Selection note: the 3RT2916 is for new-generation 3RT2 contactors in size S00; for older 3RT1 contactors choose the 3RT1916. Check the size: S00 is the smallest (3RT201x), then S0 (3RT202x) and S2 (3RT203x). Please confirm your contactor model before ordering.
