Siemens 3RV motor protection circuit breakers: for 0.09–4 kW three-phase motors, 100 kA breaking capacity, IEC/UL

Three-phase motors are easily damaged when: long-term overload overheats the windings, they keep running after a single phase is lost, or an instantaneous short-circuit current burns them out.

Siemens 3RV motor protection circuit breakers combine thermal overload, short-circuit and phase-loss protection in a single device, installed on the supply side of the motor circuit in the control cabinet, cutting the circuit as soon as a fault occurs to stop it spreading. The whole series is 45 mm wide with Icu 100 kA @ 400 V, meets both IEC 60947 and UL 508, and covers three-phase motor protection from 0.09 kW to 4 kW.

Note: when any protection condition is triggered, the breaker trips and cuts the motor supply.

Selection notes

The current setting of a 3RV breaker must match the rated current (FLC) on the motor nameplate, usually set at 100–115% of rated current. Set too high, the protection does not work; set too low, it trips frequently.

The 3RV2021-4BA10 has built-in 1NO+1NC auxiliary contacts, so the trip signal can go directly to a PLC or supervisory system — useful on automated lines that need real-time motor status monitoring. For the other models, auxiliary contacts can be added with an expansion module.

Selection advice: send us the rated current (A) on the motor nameplate and the operating voltage (V), and we will confirm the matching model. For export equipment, please also tell us whether IEC or UL compliance is required.

Common specifications across the series

  • 45 mm wide: S00 frame, mounts on standard DIN rail for tidy cabinet wiring.
  • CLASS 10 thermal overload: trips on overload within 10 seconds, meeting general induction motor protection needs.
  • Temperature compensation: consistent trip characteristics from −20 °C to +60 °C, so the protection point does not drift with ambient temperature.
  • Mechanical life 100,000 operations: suitable for automated equipment with frequent starts and stops.
  • IEC 60947-2/4-1 + UL 508: meets the requirements for both Taiwan domestic and export equipment.
