Siemens SIMATIC industrial programmable controllers — S7-300 CPU 313, SM331 analog input and SM1222 digital output, plus S7-1200 CPU 1214C and SM1231 analog input, for a complete signal chain. Used in semiconductor process automation, SMT line control, inverter integration, chemical tank control and facility power monitoring.
SIEMENS SIMATIC PLCs are used in Taiwan’s chemical, semiconductor, power generation, textile and pharmaceutical industries. The S7-300 (mid-range, backplane rack type) is a classic model launched in 1995 and still running in many older plants in Taiwan; the S7-1200 (compact to mid-range integrated controller launched in 2009) has built-in Ethernet, PROFINET and Web Server and is a common choice for new projects and smart manufacturing integration.
This series covers 6 models of 6ES7 modules across two generations, S7-300 and S7-1200, in three functional categories: CPU, analog input (voltage / current / RTD) and digital output (relay). A JIAHON affiliated company supplies customers throughout Taiwan.
⚠ Important (S7-300 EOL): Siemens officially announced End of Life for the entire S7-300 family in 2023-10, and the manufacturer no longer produces it. The 3 S7-300 models in this series (CPU 313, SM331 7KF02, SM331 7PF01) are now mainly needed as downtime spares; the SM1222 222-1HH32 is an S7-1200 expansion module and is not covered by the S7-300 EOL. For new projects, choose S7-1200 or S7-1500 first, and plan the migration path for old systems with TIA Portal.

Applications
A Siemens PLC is the “brain” of industrial automation — S7 controllers appear everywhere from semiconductor front-end vacuum processes to electronics plant facility systems, and from high-precision temperature control on SMT lines to mixing cycles in chemical tanks. Five typical applications at SMT, EMS and semiconductor plants:
- Semiconductor CVD/PVD process chamber control: on chemical and physical vapor deposition tools, the PLC controls gas valve timing, heater temperature (RTD module with PT100), vacuum level (4–20 mA input) and SCARA wafer handling robots. S7-300 + SM331 RTD is the classic combination; new projects move to S7-1500 with process program migration. CPU 313 + SM331 7PF01
- Multi-zone temperature control on SMT reflow ovens: reflow ovens usually have 8–12 temperature zones, each with its own PT100 + heater PID. The SM331 analog input reads PT100, and an SM332 analog output sends 4–20 mA to the SCR heater controller. The whole oven profile is stored in the PLC for quality traceability. SM331 7KF02 + SM332
- Inverter integration (motor speed control): for speed control of motors on belt conveyors, mixers and pumps, the S7-1200 connects to SINAMICS G120 inverters over PROFINET; the built-in Ethernet of the CPU 1214C saves the cost of a communication module. Current, speed and torque can be read in real time for predictive maintenance. CPU 1214C + PROFINET
- Chemical tank control / dosing systems: mixing, heating, dosing and circulation filtering in wet-process chemical tanks need multi-channel analog inputs (temperature, pH, level, flow) and digital outputs (solenoid valves, mixer motor starters). The SM1222 16-point relay output can drive AC 220 V contactors directly. SM1222 222-1HH32 + SM1231
- Facility BMS / power monitoring: the BMS for large plant facility power systems (air-conditioning units, chillers, inverter pumps, exhaust fans) often uses Siemens PLCs for low-level control, with SCADA / HMI above. S7-1200 + SM1231 read current / voltage / temperature over multiple analog channels and upload to SCADA via Modbus TCP. CPU 1214C + SM1231 + Modbus
Selection guide: choose the series by old or new project
| Scenario | Recommended series | Typical combination | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintaining old S7-300 plants | Same-model S7-300 spares (EOL) | CPU 313 + SM331 + SM322 | Plan S7-1500 migration at the same time |
| New mid-range process control | S7-1500 (current line) | CPU 1511 + ET 200SP I/O | Not covered on this page, please ask separately |
| New small machine control | S7-1200 | CPU 1214C + SM1231 + SM1222 | Built-in Ethernet, PROFINET |
| Inverter integration (PROFINET) | S7-1200 | CPU 1214C + SINAMICS G120 | Web Server for remote maintenance |
| Process temperature (multi-channel PT100) | SM331 RTD or SM1231 | SM331 7PF01 / SM1231 8 channels | Mind cold-junction compensation |

S7 series differences: S7-300 / S7-1200 / S7-1500
Siemens SIMATIC S7 has three main lines by scale and function:
| Series | Position | Work memory | Typical application | Status in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S7-300 | Mid-range, backplane rack type | 12–512 KB | Main control in older chemical and semiconductor plants, process machines | EOL (2023-10), service until 2033-10 |
| S7-1200 | Compact to mid-range integrated | 100–150 KB | Standalone fixtures, inverter integration, facility substations | Current line |
| S7-1500 | Mid to high-end flagship | 500 KB – 60 MB+ | Plant-wide main control, MES integration, safety PLC | Current line (not covered on this page, available on request) |
A common misconception: “the S7-1200 is the upgrade of the S7-300” — it is not. The S7-1200 sits below it (compact to mid-range); the S7-1500 is the real successor to the S7-300 (mid to high-end). Old S7-300 systems should migrate to S7-1500, not S7-1200.
Note: the S7-300 EOL in 2023-10 and service support until 2033-10 are from Siemens’ official announcement; check the EOL date of each P/N under “Product Lifecycle Information” on the Siemens website.
Migration path after S7-300 EOL: a 5-step decision process
Facing the S7-300 EOL, owners have two paths: “short-term spares” and “mid-term migration to S7-1500”. In practice most customers do both — stock spares first to buy time, then migrate step by step over 3–5 years:
- Survey the current state: count existing S7-300 modules, models and versions, and mark safety-related (S7-300F) versus general control.
- Spares strategy: stock key spares (CPU, common SMs) for 5–10 years of use (typical experience; follow the manufacturer’s specification and operating conditions).
- Migration PoC: pick one non-critical line and trial-migrate S7-300 → S7-1500 with the TIA Portal Migration Tool to find customized parts.
- Plant-wide plan: prioritize by machine criticality, migrating safety PLCs first; old machines can be postponed or replaced entirely.
- Execute + train: migrate in batches and train engineers on TIA Portal; keep the STEP 7 V5 environment until the whole plant is done.
| Scenario | Recommended approach | Estimated time (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple repair of old machines | Find same-model spares | Usually within 1–3 months |
| Safety PLC on critical lines | Migrate to S7-1500F first | 6–12 months (including PoC) |
| Plant-wide, 50+ S7-300 stations | Migrate in batches over 3–5 years | Most stations done in 2–3 years |
| New expansion projects | Use S7-1500 / 1200 directly | Follows the construction schedule |
Note: S7-1500 / S7-1500F are not covered on this page; other models are available on request.
Practical tips: reading 6ES7 part numbers and buying
The 3 digits after 6ES7 identify the module type: for example 313 = S7-300 CPU, 331 = S7-300 analog I/O, 222 = S7-1200 digital output, 214 = S7-1200 CPU, 231 = S7-1200 analog input. Memorizing this table helps you identify a P/N quickly.
The final version code (such as 0AB0 / 0AB2) affects firmware compatibility: in most cases newer versions are backward compatible, but occasionally a new version changes the firmware. Buy key spares with the same final version code, and run a full process function test after replacement.
Refurbished units carry risk: refurbished S7-300 units on the market come from mixed sources, and some are removed from decommissioned machines and relabeled. Recommendations: (1) ask about after-sales terms first; (2) do not use refurbished units for critical safety PLCs.
Trademarks: Siemens, SIMATIC, SINAMICS, TIA Portal, STEP 7, PROFINET and the model names on this page are trademarks or model names of their owners, used here only to identify the products. JIAHON is not the authorized distributor of this brand in Taiwan.
