High-melting-point wires for heat, plasma and research
Tungsten melts at 3422°C; ultra-fine 0.008 mm wire is used for filaments, electric heating elements and field emission electron guns. Gold-plated tungsten wire combines the stiffness of tungsten with the chemical inertness of gold, for STM probes and electrochemical electrodes. Tantalum wire resists strong acids (except hydrofluoric acid) and high temperatures, for leads in corrosive experiments. High-purity iron wire is dense and strongly magnetic, for magnetics research and calibration samples.
