Used bulk bags (FIBC): PP woven, 4 lifting loops, load as marked on the bag

About this product: used bulk bags (FIBC, flexible intermediate bulk containers) with a woven polypropylene (PP) tape body and 4 lifting loops. The load rating is as marked on the bag; before use, check the bag body and loops with the four checks under “Used bulk bag checks” below. For new bags, see the PP woven bulk bag and the bulk bag / jumbo bag product pages.

What a bulk bag is: a bulk bag (also called a jumbo bag, ton bag or FIBC) is a general name for industrial bulk containers. In logistics it is often called a ton bag because it commonly carries about one tonne. It is sewn from woven PP tape, and the 4 lifting loops let it be lifted by forklift. This page is for used PP woven bulk bags; the load is as marked on the bag.

How 4 lifting loops share the load

Four loops share the load: 1000 kg ÷ 4 loops = 250 kg per loop; with a 5:1 safety factor, each loop needs a breaking strength of 1250 kg.

Safety warning: all 4 loops need to take load at the same time when lifting (forklift tines or crane hooks evenly placed). Lifting by one side or by 2 loops concentrates stress on a few seams; the stitching can break and the bag can burst open, a common cause of bulk bag accidents.

Loop construction: woven PP straps (5–7 cm wide) sewn to the four corners of the bag, with 4–8 crossing rows of stitching.

Used bulk bag checks

  • Multi-trip bags: designed for 5–10 uses. After each use, check four points before reusing: (1) no broken woven tapes; (2) no loose stitching at the loop seams; (3) no UV discoloration or brittleness; (4) clean inside.
  • Single-trip bags: in principle discarded after one use and sent out with waste; some waste contractors recycle the woven PP (ground into plastic pellets).
  • Buying used bags: used bags (multi-trip bags used once or twice) are offered by some sellers; follow the load marked on the bag and confirm it by inspection. Ask for photos of the bag before buying and check the four points above yourself.

Common questions

How much can a used bulk bag carry? Follow the load marked on the bag, and inspect the woven tapes, loop stitching, UV ageing and cleanliness before use.

How should a bulk bag be lifted? With all 4 loops loaded at the same time; lifting by one side or 2 loops can break the seams.
