Four precision functional alloys in thin sheet
These four alloy families each have distinct electromagnetic and thermal properties: iron-nickel (high permeability, or very low thermal expansion at 36% nickel), nickel-copper-zinc (nickel silver), iron-cobalt-nickel (for glass-to-metal sealing) and nickel-chromium (for electric heating elements). They are used for EMI shielding, precision sealing, sensors and resistance elements. All are available from 0.02 mm thick. No returns or exchanges — please confirm composition and dimensions before ordering.

Iron-nickel alloys behave very differently with composition. Fe15Ni85 (high nickel) has high magnetic permeability and is a traditional material for EMI shielding enclosures. Fe64Ni36 is a low-expansion alloy with a thermal expansion coefficient of only about 1.2 × 10⁻⁶/K between −100 and 100°C, used in precision optical instruments, satellite structures and gauges. Fe50Ni50 has medium permeability for soft magnetic parts.

- Nickel-copper-zinc (nickel silver) looks like silver and resists wear and corrosion; it is used for precision springs, switch contacts and decorative parts.
- Iron-cobalt-nickel has a thermal expansion coefficient close to borosilicate glass, for hermetic packages and glass-to-metal seals in electron tubes.
- Nickel-chromium has a resistivity of about 110 µΩ·cm and a maximum working temperature of about 1200°C, for heating wires and heating elements.
