An input device for industrial control panels — an illuminated push button switch has a built-in LED indicator that confirms the operation and gives status feedback. Used on control panel buttons for start / stop / emergency stop / mode selection on SMT lines, EMS assembly lines and semiconductor equipment.
An illuminated push button switch is the bridge between automated machines and the human-machine interface: the operator sends commands with the button (start, stop, reset, mode select) and gets feedback from the light or display. It combines “input button + LED indicator” in one device: it can light up when pressed to confirm the operation, or stay lit during operation to show process status.
This series of industrial control panel input devices is used on SMT printers, placement machines and reflow ovens, EMS assembly and test lines, semiconductor front-end equipment and cleanroom entrance controls. A JIAHON affiliated company supplies customers throughout Taiwan.

Applications
Illuminated push button switches are standard input devices on electronics manufacturing control panels. Four typical applications at SMT, EMS and semiconductor plants:
- Start / stop buttons on SMT machines: operating panels of printers, placement machines and reflow ovens use a green illuminated button for start (lit when running) and a red illuminated button for stop / reset. Standard Φ22 mm mounting hole. Green 1a / red 1b / DC 24 V LED
- Emergency stop (E-stop) safety chain: SMT lines, assembly lines and automated storage entrances require a red latching mushroom-head emergency stop button; its normally closed (NC) contact is wired into the safety circuit, so pressing it cuts power to the machine immediately and locks, requiring a manual turn to reset. Complies with ISO 13850. Red mushroom 1b latching / usually not illuminated
- Auto / manual mode selection on semiconductor equipment: three-position auto / manual / maintenance selection on semiconductor front-end CVD/PVD/etch tools uses a selector switch, with a key lock to prevent accidental switching. Can be integrated with PLC mode indicator lamps. 3-position selector / key lock / 1a2b
- EMS test fixture buttons / signal towers: ICT and FCT test fixtures at EMS plants use a yellow illuminated button to start the test, a green lamp for PASS and a red lamp for FAIL; can be combined with a tower light to show line status. Yellow / green / red 1a / DC 24 V LED flush
Selection guide: recommended specifications by use
| Use | Button head | Contacts | Light color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | Flush illuminated, momentary | 1a (NO) | Green |
| Stop | Flush illuminated, momentary | 1b (NC) | Red |
| Emergency stop | Red latching mushroom | 1b or 2b (NC, dual safety contacts) | Not illuminated (or separate red lamp) |
| Reset | Flush momentary | 1a (NO) | Blue / white |
| Mode select (auto/manual) | Selector | 1a1b or 2a2b | Not illuminated (position shows the state) |
| Warning | Illuminated or separate indicator lamp | — | Yellow / orange |
Why use “illuminated” buttons on control panels?
When the operator presses the start button, the button itself lights green, meaning “command sent, machine running” — no need to check the PLC display or HMI touch panel. This matters for ergonomics on high-speed lines: an operator on an SMT line focuses on the board and placement head and only glances at the button area out of the corner of the eye.
A common misconception: many newcomers think “red = always emergency stop”. In fact a normal stop button (the machine stops normally when pressed) is also red, but it is a flush momentary button; an emergency stop only counts as such if it is a red latching mushroom head. They look very different and have completely different safety ratings.
Selection steps: 5 key decisions
In practice you do not start from “what button do I want” — you work back from the actual conditions:
- Measure the hole size: Φ22 is mainstream, Φ16/25/30 less common. Adapter rings can be used when changing types.
- Confirm the use: start / stop / E-stop / mode select / reset / warning — each needs a different button head.
- Check the PLC side: how many contacts? Normally open (a) or normally closed (b)? Sink or source PLC inputs?
- Lamp voltage: DC 24 V (industrial standard) / DC 6 V / AC 110 V / AC 220 V, according to the control supply on site.
- Environment: cleanroom / general factory / outdoor? Start from IP65; consider IP69K only where high-pressure hot-water washdown is used; in corrosive gas environments, confirm the corrosion resistance of the housing and materials separately (IP ratings cover only dust and water).
Practical tips: what to confirm before buying
Get the number of contacts right: when asking for a quote, state the contact requirement directly, such as “my PLC DI needs 3a3b”, so you do not find out after delivery that there are not enough contacts. The model on this page has 1a1b contacts; other multi-contact models are available on request.
Check the drive circuit when converting old machines to LED: replacing an old incandescent bulb button directly with an LED module may leave it unlit (reverse polarity). First confirm whether the original LED module is AC/DC universal, or send a photo of the data sheet with your inquiry.
