SKF CMSS 786A-IS intrinsically safe accelerometer
Rotating equipment (motors, pumps, compressors, turbines, gearboxes) always vibrates in operation, and abnormal vibration is an early indicator of faults such as bearing wear, unbalance and misalignment. The SKF CMSS 786A-IS is an intrinsically safe (IS) piezoelectric ceramic accelerometer designed for installation in Class I / Division 1 or ATEX Zone 0/1 hazardous areas at petrochemical plants, refineries and gas facilities.
Sensitivity is 100 mV/g and frequency response covers 10 Hz to 10 kHz, capturing both low-frequency unbalance and high-frequency gear mesh / bearing defect signals. With ±5% sensitivity tolerance and strong EMI/RFI shielding, it maintains signal integrity even in high-voltage environments such as power plants.

CMSS 786A series comparison
| Model | Hazardous area rating | Sensitivity | Frequency range | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CMSS 786A-IS | Intrinsically safe (Class I Div 1 / ATEX Zone 0/1) | 100 mV/g (±5%) | 10 Hz–10 kHz | Petrochemical, refining, gas — higher hazard rating |
| CMSS 786A-D2 | Division 2 (Class I Div 2) | 100 mV/g (±5%) | 10 Hz–10 kHz | Div 2 hazardous areas |
| CMSS 787A-IS | Intrinsically safe | Lower | Wider | Special high-frequency applications |
Typical industries
| Industry | Monitored equipment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Petrochemical / refining | Compressors, pumps, turbines | Zone 0/1 hazardous areas require IS |
| Natural gas processing | Pipeline compressor stations, boosters | Explosive gas atmospheres |
| Thermal / nuclear power | Steam turbines, generators, pumps | High EMI/RFI, shielding needed |
| Hydropower | Water turbines, cooling water pumps | Low-frequency monitoring (from 10 Hz) |
| Mining / cement | Ball mills, fans, crushers | Heavy-duty equipment, 80 g peak range |
Selection note: the CMSS 786A-IS must be used with an intrinsic safety barrier installed on the safe-area side to limit energy entering the hazardous area. With SKF QuickCollect Ex, use the CMAC 8010-EX extension cable. For mounting, use the 1/4-28 UNF stud with the CMSS 910QDP-1 mounting pad; avoid magnetic mounting, which reduces high-frequency response.
